Let \(V\) denote the unit disk in \(\mathbb{C}\) and \(\Gamma\) its boundary. Let \(M\subset\mathbb{C}^n\) be a generic CR-manifold. An analytic disk attached to \(M\) is a \(C^{1,\alpha}\)-map \(\varphi: \overline U\to\mathbb{C}^n\) such that \(\varphi|_U\) is holomorphic and \(\varphi(\Gamma) \subset M\). Fix a base point \(P=\varphi (\xi_0)\), \(\xi_0\in\Gamma\). Fix arbitrarily \(\xi_1\in\Gamma\), \(\xi_1 \neq\xi_0\). As \(\widetilde\varphi\) runs over all perturbations of \(\varphi \) (i.e. \(\widetilde\varphi\) is still an analytic disk attached to \(\Gamma\) and \(\widetilde\varphi (\xi_0)=p)\) \(d\widetilde\varphi (\xi_1)\) spans a vector subspace of \(T_{\varphi (\xi_1)}M\). Its codimension is called a defect of \(\varphi\). Notion was introduced by Tumanov. The main purpose of this paper is to show that the defect can be described by perturbations of the interior of the disk. Namely, fix an interior point \(\xi_2\in U\). Then the codimension of the \(\mathbb{C}\)-span of \(d\widetilde\varphi (\xi_2)\) in \(\mathbb{C}^n\), when \(\widetilde \varphi\) sums over all perturbations fixing \(P\), is equal to the defect of \(\varphi\).
