If the \(C^\omega\) functions \(f_1,f_2:M\to{\mathbb R}\) on a real-analytic set \(M\) determine hypersurfaces \(N_i=\{f_i=0\}\) such that \(N_1\cap N_2\) consists of a single point, then provided \(0\) is a regular value of both \(f_1\) and \(f_2\), the hypersurface in \(M\) defined by \(f_1f_2=\varepsilon\) is diffeomorphic to \(N_1\# N_2\) for \(\varepsilon\) small enough. The authors prove this observation and use it to construct algebraic equations defining a subset of \({\mathbb R}^5\) diffeomorphic to \(\#^2\) \textbf{RP} \(^3\). They also note that if \(N_1'\) and \(N_2'\) are compact hypersurfaces in \({\mathbb R}^{n+1}\), each given by a single global equation, then an equation can be found which realises their connected sum as a hypersurface in \({\mathbb R}^{n+1}\).
