A diameter of a root system is a line joining an antipodal pair of roots. The 240 roots of the root system \(E_8\) determine 120 diameters. Any two of these diameters make an angle of sixty or ninety degrees. The diameter graph \(\Gamma\) of \(E_8\) is the graph whose vertices are the 120 diameters of \(E_8\). Two vertices of \(\Gamma\) are adjacent if and only if they are orthogonal. The Weyl group \(E_8\) acts in a rank three way on the 120 diameters, which implies that \(\Gamma\) is a strongly regular graph. The author shows that \(\Gamma\) is uniquely geometrisable (i.e. that \(\Gamma\) is the point graph of a unique partial geometry), and that the full automorphism group of \(\Gamma\) is Alt(9). Moreover, it is shown that Alt(9) acts transitively on the flags of \(\Gamma\) with vertex-stabilizer, respectively edge-stabilizer, a group isomorphic to P\(\Gamma\)L(2,8), respectively AGL(3, 2).
