The authors study numerically three-dimensional time-dependent complex viscoelastic flows. A fully three-dimensional implicit finite volume method is developed in cylindrical coordinates. The investigation is focused on well-known swirling flows in a confined cylinder with rotating bottom. Through careful comparisons with available experimental data, the authors estimate the suitability of various constitutive models for viscoelastic fluids.
