Let \(H\) be a Hopf algebra and \(A\) a right \(H\)-comodule algebra. The authors construct a right \(H\)-comodule algebra structure on \(A\otimes H\), denoted by \(A[H]\), generalizing the construction of the group ring of a graded ring due to \textit{C. Năstăsescu} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 33, 313-335 (1984; Zbl 0542.16003)]. The algebra of coinvariants of \(A[H]\) is isomorphic to \(A\), and \(A[H]^{co(H)}\subseteq A[H]\) is an \(H\)-cleft extension. Several applications to categories of relative Hopf modules are given, in particular a Maschke type theorem. The dual construction is also discussed.
