    The author generalizes a theorem of Bing which states that if a closed 3- manifold M has a triangulation in which the 3-simplices can be ordered \((\sigma_ 1,\sigma_ 2,...,\sigma_ n)\) so that each \(\sigma_ i\) hits \(\cup_{j<i}\sigma_ j\) in a connected set, then M is homeomorphic to \(S^ 3\). In particular he shows that if Q is a polyhedron for which \(\pi_ 1(Q)\) requires more than n generators, any space obtained by attaching n 2-cells to Q is not collapsible.
