As a part of the KMS condition, \textit{J. de Cannière} [Commun. Math. Phys. 84, 187-206 (1982; Zbl 0507.46053)] defined a state \(\omega\) of a \(C^*\)-algebra A to be spectrally passive for an action \(\tau\) of \({\mathbb{R}}\) on A if \(\omega\) is \(\tau\)-invariant and \(\omega (x^*x)\leq \omega (xx^*)\) for all x in the spectral subspace \(A^{\tau}(- \infty,0)\). If A is the CAR algebra and \(\rho\) is a quasi-free action whose one-particle Hamiltonian H has no eigenvalues, \textit{J. de Cannière} showed [J. Funct. Anal. 58, 125-149 (1984; Zbl 0573.46040)] that the spectrally passive, gauge-invariant, quasi-free states have one- particle densities of the form \(Q=(I+e^{\beta H})^{-1}\) for some \(0\leq \beta \leq \infty.\) The present paper considers the case when H is discrete. The precise condition on Q for spectral passivity is combinatorial, but if the Connes spectrum of \(\tau\) is non-zero, it implies that \(Q=(I+e^{\beta (H+T)})^{-1}\) for some \(0<\beta <\infty\) and some operator T of bounded trace norm, apart from some degenerate possibilities.
