Let A be a real Banach *-algebra with an identity element. Suppose there exists an additive function \(f: A\to A\) such that \(f(a)=af(a^{- 1})a^*\) holds for all invertible elements \(a\in A\). We prove that in this case f is of the form \(f(a)=(af(1)+f(1)a^*)\). Using this result we prove the result below which generalizes S. Kurepa's extension of Jordan- von Neumann characterization of pre-Hilbert space. Let X be a left A-module, where A is a *-algebra. A mapping \(Q: X\to A\) is called an A-quadratic functional if the relations \(Q(x+y)+Q(x-y)- 2Q(x)+2Q(y)\) and \(Q(ax)=aQ(x)^*\) hold for all x,y\(\in X\) and \(a\in A\). A function B of two vectors \(B: X\times X\to A\) is called an A- sesquilinear functional if it is linear in the first argument and antilinear in the second argument. Suppose that A is either a complex Banach *-algebra with an identity element or the field of quaternions. Then for Q an A-quadratic functional defined on X, there exists a sesquilinear functional B such that \(B(x,x)=Q(x)\) holds for all \(x\in X\).
