The authors extend the main result of their earlier paper [Lect. Notes Math. 1051, 38-48 (1984; Zbl 0543.57014)] to a slightly more general setting. Let \(\Gamma\) be a discrete cocompact torsion-free subgroup of a Lie group G (with finitely many connected components) and K be a maximal compact subgroup of G. If N is a closed subset homotopically equivalent to the double coset space \(M=K\setminus G/\Gamma\), then \(N\times {\mathbb{R}}^ 3\) and \(M\times {\mathbb{R}}^ 3\) are homeomorphic. This result was proved by the authors in the other paper under the extra assumption that G is linear and analytic. Actually, this result, in its general statement, is a consequence of the following theorem proved in this paper. Theorem. Let K be a maximal compact subgroup of G and \(X=K\setminus G\) which is diffeomorphic to Euclidean space \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\). Let \(\Gamma\subset G\) be a torsion-free discrete subgroup and \(M^ n=X/\Gamma =K\setminus G/\Gamma\). Let \(D^ i\) denote the closed i- dimensional disc and \[ \theta: [M^ n\times D^ i,\partial;G/Top,*]\quad \to \quad L^ s_{n+i}(\pi_ 1M^ n,w_ 1(M^ n)) \] be the surgery map, and \(n+i>4\). Under these assumptions, \(\theta\) is a split monomorphism.
