Following the author, a Krull-Schmidt theory is a theory in which a given module is a finite direct sum of indecomposable submodules whose endomorphism rings are local; equivalently, the endomorphism ring of the module is semiperfect. There is an example of R. G. Swan given in a paper of \textit{E. G. Evans} [Pac. J. Math. 46, 115-121 (1973; Zbl 0272.13006)] of a f.g. module over a commutative, Noetherian semiperfect ring which fails to satisfy a Krull-Schmidt theory. Therefore one may consider the following question: Which rings \(R\) have the property that every f.g. \(R\)-module has a Krull-Schmidt theory? The main result of the paper states: If \(R\) is a (not necessarily commutative) complete semilocal Noetherian ring, then every f.g. \(R\)-module satisfies a Krull-Schmidt theory. Here a ring \(R\) with Jacobson radical \(J\) is called complete if \(\bigcap^{\infty}_{n=1}J^ n=0\) and \(R\) is complete with respect to the \(J\)-adic topology.
