Linear time-varying finite dimensional systems of the form \(\dot x(t)=A(t)x(t)+B(t)u(t)\), B, C are continuous real valued matrices, are considered. If \({\mathcal V}\) denotes a linear subspace of the function space of free motions \(\{\) x(\(\cdot)| \dot x=Ax\}\) the concept of controllability of the free trajectories into \({\mathcal V}\) is introduced and various characterizations are given. If \(\dot x(t)=A(t)x(t)\) possesses an exponential dichotomy the concept is used to characterize when there exists a feedback F(\(\cdot)\) such that \(\dot x(t)=(A+BF)(t)x(t)\) is exponentially stable.
