Let E be a vector space endowed with two norms \(\| \cdot \| _ 1\), \(\| \cdot \| _ 2\). A third norm on E can be defined by \(\| \cdot \| _ 3=\| (\| \cdot \| _ 1,\| \cdot \| _ 2)\|\) where \(\| \cdot \|\) is a norm on \({\mathbb{R}}^ 2\). We prove: a) The topology defined by \(\| \cdot \| _ 3\) is the supremum of the topologies defined by \(\| \cdot \| _ i\), \(i=1,2\). b) If one of the norms \(\| \cdot \| _ 1\), \(\| \cdot \| _ 2\) is strictly convex and \(\| \cdot \|\) is strictly monotone, then \(\| \cdot \| _ 3\) is strictly convex. c) If the norms \(\| \cdot \| _ i\), \(i=1,2\), are smooth and \(\| \cdot \|\) is Gateaux- differentiable on the open positive cone of \({\mathbb{R}}^ 2\), then \(\| \cdot \| _ 3\) is smooth. d) If a strictly monotone and convex function of two convex functionals \(\phi _ 1\), \(\phi _ 2\) is Gateaux (Fréchet)-differentiable, then so are \(\phi _ 1\), \(\phi _ 2\). In particular, if \(\| \cdot \| _ 3\) is smooth and \(\| \cdot \|\) strictly monotone, then the norms \(\| \cdot \| _ i\), \(i=1,2\), are both smooth. e) Let \(P^ i_ G(x)\) be the set of best approximation of \(x\in E\) by elements of \(G\subset E\) with respect to \(\| \cdot \| _ i\), \(i=1,2,3\). Then \(P^ 1_ G(x)\cap P^ 2_ G(x)\neq \emptyset\) if and only if \(P^ 3_ G(x)\) is the same set for all strictly monotone norms \(\| \cdot \|\) on \({\mathbb{R}}^ 2\), and in this case one has \(P^ 1_ G(x)\cap P^ 2_ G(x)=P^ 3_ G(x).\)
