The authors study the time decay properties of solutions of the nonlinear system of Klein-Gordon equations: \[ \square u+m^ 2 u+g^ 2 uv^ 2=0;\quad \square v+\sigma^ 2 v+g^ 2 vu^ 2=0 \] where X runs in \({\mathbb{R}}^ 3\) and \(t\geq 0\). Here \(\square\) denotes the d'Alembertian operator i.e. \(\square =\partial^ 2/\partial t^ 2-\Delta\), and \(\Delta\) is the usual Laplacian operator. Such system of interacting relativistic (scalar) fields were suggested by a number of authors in the last two decades. For the unknown functions u(x,t) and v(x,t) the initial data \(u(x,0)=\phi_ 1(x)\), \(u_ t(x,0)=\phi_ 2(x)\), \(v(x,0)=\psi_ 1(x)\), \(v_ t(x,0)=\psi_ 2(x)\) are given, too. Two basic results are demonstrated. First, in the \(L^{\infty}(R^ 3)\) norm solutions decay like \(O(t^{-3/2})\) as \(t\to +\infty\) provided the initial data are sufficiently small, in a well determined sense. Second, the finite energy solutions of such a system decay in locally energy norm as \(t\to +\infty\). Authors affirm that unfortunately they could not find the precise rate of decay in this case, which they suspect should be \(O(t^{-1})\).
