Let \(S_ n^{k,r}\) be the family of polynomial splines of order k with at most n-1 free knots, each of multiplicity r. For a sufficiently smooth function f on [0,1] the author obtains asymptotic estimates of the following type: \[ \lim_{n\to \infty}n^ kdist_ p\{f,S_ n^{k,r}\}=C_{k,r,p}\| f^{(r)}\|_ q, \] where the distance is considered in the \(L_ p[0,1]\) norm and \(\| \cdot \|_ q\) is the norm in \(L_ q[0,1]\) with \(q=p/(pk+1).\) Similar asymptotic properties are considered for the approximation of vector valued functions by vector splines.
