Let \(\mu\) be a finite Borel measure in C; its Cauchy transform \({\hat \mu}(z)=\int (d\mu /(\zeta -z))\) is then a distribution in C and the author remarks that the Leibniz differentiation rule holds for the product \(\mu \chi_ r\) for almost all \(r>0\), where \(\chi_ r\) is the characteristic function of a disc \(\Delta_ r=| z-\zeta_ 0| <r\), \(\zeta_ 0\) fixed. This localisation leads to several interesting applications to rational approximation and to the deduction of local behaviour of the measure \(\mu\) that reflects restrictions imposed upon its Cauchy transform. For example, if \({\hat \mu}\in BMO\), then \(\overline{\lim}_{r\to 0}(| \mu | (\Delta_ r)/r)\leq C<\infty\), where C is a constant independent of \(\zeta_ 0\).
