The purpose of this paper is to compute the explicit inverse of a symmetric tridiagonal matrix with variable entries. The author shows how this knowledge is effectively applied in the error analysis of the Sturm- Liouville eigenvalue problem. The properties of the matrix are applied to obtain approximate values of \(\lambda\) and to prove convergence of the numerical method. A numerical illustration is given.
