In this note, a short and conceptual proof is given for Koebe's theorem (which states that any planar Riemann surface is conformally equivalent to a domain in the Riemann sphere). The proof uses Koebe's compactness theorem for normalised univalent functions on a domain in the complex plane, and the solvability of the classical Dirichlet problem for domains with smooth compact boundary in Riemann surfaces. The main point of the paper is the observation that Koebe's theorem is easily proved for doubly-connected relatively compact regions with smooth boundary in any Riemann surface, and that the general case follows easily from this special case.
