The inverse scattering transform may be regarded as a nonlinear version of the Fourier transform. Considering the nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ (NLS)\quad iq_ t=q_{xx}+2| q| q^ 2,\quad 0\leq x<\infty,\quad q(x,0)=h(x),\quad q_ k(0,t)+\alpha q(0,t)=g(t), \] and its linear limit (*) \(iq_ t=q_{xx}\) the author looks for generalization of the sine transform, or of the transform \[ \hat q(k)=\int^{\infty}_{0}d\xi (e^{2ik\xi}+f(k)e^{-2ik\xi}, \] which solves the linear problem (*). Using the Lax pairs the author derives a single integrodifferential equation which the scattering data must satisfy. For the special case of homogeneous boundary conditions the scattering data is given in a closed form.
