Let A be a left and right noetherian ring. Denote by mod A the category of all finitely generated left A-modules and for \(i>0\) by \(syz^ iA\) the class of all \(X\in mod A\) which are i-th syzygies. We establish the implications (1)\(\Rightarrow (2)\Rightarrow (3)\Leftrightarrow (4)\) between the following conditions: (1) In a minimal injective resolution \(0\to A_ A\to E_ 0\to E_ 1\to...\), weak dim \(E_ i\leq i+1\) for all \(i\geq 0.\) (2) For all \(i\geq 1\), \(syz^ iA\) is closed under extensions. (3) For all \(i\geq 2\), \(syz^ iA\) consists of all reflexive modules \(X\in mod A\) with reduced grade \(Hom_ A(X,A)\geq i-1.\) (4) grade \(Ext^ i_ A(X,A)\geq i-1\) for all \(i\geq 2\) and \(X\in mod A.\) In particular, if A is commutative, each of the above conditions is equivalent to A a Gorenstein ring.
