Let \(S=\{S(t):\) \(t\geq 0\}\) be a strongly continuous semigroup of (nonlinear) contractions on a closed convex subset C of a uniformly convex Banach space X. Let u be an almost orbit of S, i.e. \[ \lim_{t\to \infty}\sup_{h\geq 0}\| u(t+h)-S(h)u(t)\| =0, \] and suppose \[ \lim_{t\to \infty}\| u(t+h)-u(t)\| =\rho (h) \] exists uniformly over \(h\geq 0\). Then u is almost periodic in the sense of Eberlein, and there is a unique y in the weak \(\omega\)-limit set of u and there is a unique \(\phi\) which vanishes at infinity in a suitable weak sense \([\phi \in W_ 0([0,\infty),X)]\) such that \[ u(\cdot)=S(\cdot)y+\phi (\cdot) \] and S(\(\cdot)y\) is almost periodic. As a result of this theorem the authors can obtain the known ergodic theorems [of Baillon, Kobayshi-Miyadera, et. al.] can be deduced from the classical (1949) ergodic theorem of \textit{W. Eberlein} [Am. Math. Soc. 67, 217-240 (1949; Zbl 0034.064)].
