The author studies right alternative rings R of characteristic \(\neq 2,3\) that satisfy \([[a,b],a]=0\), where \([a,b]=ab-ba\) denotes the commutator. If R has no nonzero ideal I such that \(I^ 2=0\), then R is shown to satisfy the stronger identity \([[a,b],c]=0\). The latter rings are the well-known strongly (-1,1)-rings. The proof requires a skilful derivation of a lengthy list of identities. The author also gives an example of a right alternative ring satisfying \([[a,b],a]=0\) but not \([[a,b],c]=0\).
