\textit{A. J. Chorin} [J. Comput. Phys. 57, 472-490 (1985; Zbl 0555.65085)] has proposed to approximate curvatures of a boundary curve of a domain from the areas covered by the domain in the squares of a sufficiently fine grid in the plane near a boundary point. The authors improve on Chorin's method using quadratic approximations that can be obtained uniquely from the data of a 3 by 3 grid.
