The interesting paper deals with the spectral properties of operators generated by the boundary value problems for linearized systems of an inhomogeneous rotating liquid. The paper proceeds and generalizes the results of the papers by the first author and \textit{P. P. Kumar} [Sib. Math. J. 27, 424-433 (1986); translation from Sib. Mat. Zh. 27, No.3(157), 142-153 (1986; Zbl 0613.35015)] and \textit{P. K. Pal} and the first author [Sov. Math., Dokl. 31, 318-322 (1985); translation from Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR. 281, No.3, 529-534 (1985; Zbl 0615.35059)]. The authors study the Sobolev system \[ \rho (x)\frac{\partial \vec v}{\partial t}+\rho (x)[\omega,\vec v]+\nabla {\mathcal P}=0,\quad div(\rho (x)v)=0 \] in the domain \(D=\{(x,t):\quad x\in R^ 3,\quad t>0\}\) with the boundary conditions (i) \(\vec V_ n|_{\partial \Omega}=0\) or (ii) \({\mathcal P}|_{\partial \Omega}=0\), \(t\geq 0\), where \(\vec V(x,t)=(v_ 1,v_ 2,v_ 3)\) is the velocity vector, \(\omega =(0,0,\omega)\) is the Coriolis parameter, \(\omega =const>0\), and [\(\cdot,\cdot]\) is the vector product; for the problem of the normal oscillations \({\mathcal P}(x,t)=q(x)e^{-\mu t},\) \(\mu\in C.\) In the case of incompressible fluid for the two boundary value problems in bounded domain and in whole \(R^ 3\) the authors prove, by the construction of a Weyl sequence, that the spectrum of the operators corresponding to these problems is essential, consists of continuous spectrum, the limit points of discrete spectrum and of eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity. The spectrum takes up the closed interval on the imaginary axis, defined by the Coriolis parameter and is symmetric with respect to 0. For the system with variable coefficients taking into account of the compressibility, the authors also by the construction of a Weyl sequence, prove the existence of the essential spectrum occupying the same closed interval as at previous occasions, but outside this interval there are eigenvalues of finite multiplicity in the case of bounded domain and the continuous spectrum - in the case of whole \(R^ 3.\) In the paper the classes of uniqueness and non-uniqueness in nonisotropic space \(L_ p(R^ 3)\) for solutions of the wave equation are studied; the results are applied to the investigation of the limit amplitude of the Cauchy problem for Sobolev systems.
