Separating sets by Fourier-Stieltjes transforms (Q1824804)

It is shown that if A and B are uniformly separated closed subsets of a locally compact Abelian group \(\Gamma\) and A and B are in the coset ring of \(\Gamma\) with the discrete topology then there is a compactly supported measure on the dual of \(\Gamma\) with Fourier transform equal to one on A and zero on B. In part, the purpose of this paper is to correct an error of an earlier paper by the authors [see J. Funct. Anal. 69, 141 (1986; Zbl 0633.43003)].
