Let X be an arbitrary topological space and F: \(X\to {\mathbb{R}}^ a \)multifunction, whose values are nonempty intervals. It is proved that f admits a continuous selection if and only if it admits a selection k (without any regularity assumptions) such that each pair of Lebesgue sets \(L_ r(k)\), \(L^ s(\inf F)\) and \(L_ r(k)\), \(L^ s(-\sup F)\), \(r<s\), is completely separated. \{Reviewer's remark: Necessary and sufficient conditions for the insertion of a continuous function were previously documented, e.g. Theorem 3 in \textit{E. P. Lane}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 87, No.3, 539-542 (1983; Zbl 0511.54010), Theorem 3.4 on p. 497 in \textit{D. Preiss} and \textit{J. Vilimovsky}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 261, No.2, 483-501 (1980; Zbl 0437.54016). A more extensive bibliography is contained in reviewer's note in Real Analysis Exch. 13 (1987-88), No.1, 94-99 (1988). Results of the paper under review are simple reformulations of above mentioned theorems.\}
