Clouds are a means which combines features of fuzzy sets, probability theory, and interval analysis and which should be appropriate for numerical computations. -- The paper begins with an introduction of the basic concepts of clouds and their connections to intervals, fuzzy sets, and probability intervals. Then the relationship of clouds to uncertain probability, to lower and upper cumulative distribution functions in one variable, to consistent probability and necessity measures are investigated. Finally, the computation of functions of a random variable over a cloud and related problems are discussed. Possibilities to reduce the computational aspects to optimization problems, for which efficient algorithms are already available, are emphasized.
