Difference equations in Banach spaces (Q1827200)

The authors study difference equations which discretely approximate the two-point boundary value problems (BVPs) \(y''= f(x, y, y')\), \(x\in [0, 1]\), \(y(0)= A\), \(y(1)= B\), \(A,B\in E\) where \(f: [0,1]\times E\times E\to E\) and \(E\) is a Banach space. Analogues to theorems for BVPs regarding a priori bounds and existence of solutions are found for the discrete problem. Solutions to the discrete problem are shown to converge in certain sense to solutions of the continuous problem. An example arising in the study of the finite deflections of an elastic string is investigated.
