Gefragt ist, wieviel Summanden allgemein ausreichen, um eine quadratische Form \[ ax^2 + 2hxy + by^2 \] als Quadratsumme \[ \sum\limits_{r=1}^n (a_rx + b_ry)^2 \] mit ganzzahligen Koeffizienten \(a_r\), \(b_r\) darzustellen. Daß \(n=4\) nicht immer ausreicht, erkennt man sofort an der Form \(x^2 + 7y^2\), wo aus \(a_1 = 1\), \(a+2=\cdots= 0\) folgt: \(b_1 = 0\), und dann noch \(b_2, b_3, b_4, b_5\) nötig sind. Es wird nun gezeigt, daß \(n = 5\) immer ausreicht, aber auch \(5\) Summanden notwendig sind, wenn \(\Delta = ab - h^2\) die Form \(4^\varrho (8\sigma - 1)\) hat, sonst \(n\leqq 4\). Für \(\Delta = 4^\varrho (8\sigma - 1)\) braucht man auch bei rationalen \(a_r\), \(b_r\) schon \(5\) Summanden, wie Landau gezeigt hat.
