Let \(E\) be a separable Banach space such that the map \(\varphi(x):= \|x\|^{2p}\) is twice Fréchet differentiable on \(E\) and satisfies \(\|\varphi''(x)\|\leq K_p\|x\|^{2(p-1)}\) for some \(p\geq 1\) and some constant \(K_p\). Such Banach spaces turn out to be of \(M\)-type 2. Consequently, there is an equivalent 2-smooth norm and a unique compatible semi inner-product on \(E\times E\). Let \(\mu\) be a Radon measure on \(E\). The author considers symmetric Dirichlet operators in \(L^2(E,\mu)\), initially defined on the space of all Fréchet differentiable functions with bounded derivatives up to order \(p\). The main result is an approximation criterion for essential selfadjointness of such operators: If the coefficients of \(H_\mu\) can be approximated by a sequence of coefficients that satisfy certain growth conditions, then \(H_\mu\) is essentially selfadjoint.
