Let \(S\) be an orthogonal polygon in \(\mathbb{R}^ 2\). It turns out that the dent edges of \(S\) are important in determining whether \(S\) is starshaped via staircase paths: First, if \(S\) is not orthogonally convex, then for every point \(x\) in \(S\) there is a dent edge \(D_ x\) such that \(x\) sees (via staircase paths in \(S)\) every point of \(D_ x\). Furthermore, for \(S\) simply connected, if every two points belonging to dent edges of \(S\) are clearly visible (via staircase paths in \(S)\) from some common point, then all dent edges are clearly visible (via staircase paths in \(S)\) from some common point \(p\). Finally, when this occurs, set \(S\) is starshaped (via staircase paths), and \(p\) is in the staircase kernel of \(S\).
