Freud weights are of the form \(W(x) = \exp (- Q(x))\) where \(Q : R \to R\) is even, continuous and of polynomial growth at infinity. The orthogonal polynomials \(p_n\) for the weight \(W^2\) have been studied quite intensively during the last few years. The authors investigate the functions of the second kind, which are given by \(q_n (x) = \int p_n (t) W^2 (t)/(x - t)dt\). This integral is well defined when \(x\) is in the complex plane, away from the real line, but the authors deal with real \(x\), in which case the Cauchy principal value is taken so that \(q_n\) becomes a Hilbert transform of \(p_n W^2\). They obtain bounds on these functions of the second kind in \(L_\infty\) and \(L_p\). A generalized function of the second kind -- the Hilbert transform of \(p_n Wv\), for a fixed function \(v\) -- is also considered. The obtained estimates are then used to investigate the convergence of series with functions of the second kind, which is relevant for approximating principal value integrals.
