Enumeration of loopless maps on the projective plane (Q1847596)

This article presents functional equations satisfied by the two-parameter generating functions for counting rooted loopless maps on the sphere and on the projective plane by the number of edges and the valency of the root-face. Explicit formulae are presented for counting both types of maps by number of edges alone and, in the case of maps on the projective plane, an asymptotic formula is also given. Reviewer's remark: The explicit formula for the number of rooted loopless planar maps with \(n\) edges is attributed to \textit{E. A. Bender} and \textit{N. C.
