Let \(f: Z \to S\) be a surjective quasi-projective morphism of varieties. Then the sheaf \(\mathcal V = R^k_{f^*} (\mathbb C)\) restricts to a variation of graded-polarized mixed Hodge structures over some Zariski dense open subset of \(S\). Such variations occur in connection with the monodromy representations of smooth projective varieties as well as some topics in mirror symmetry. In this paper the author proves an analog of Schmidt's nilpotent orbit theorem for admissible variations of graded-polarized mixed Hodge structures \(\mathcal V \to \Delta^*\). He also extends certain aspects of Simpson's correspondence between harmonic metrics and variations of Hodge structures to the category of complex variations of mixed Hodge structures.
