Let \(G\) be a connected non-compact real semisimple Lie group of real rank one and \(K\) a maximal compact subgroup of \(G\). The homogeneous space \(X=G/K\) is a Riemannian symmetric space of rank one. For some fixed complex-valued function \(\varphi :R\rightarrow C\) supported on the half line of positive real numbers and some fixed exponent \(p\) in the interval \((1;2)\), the author defines, via the Cartan decomposition of \(G\), a \(K\)-bi-invariant complex function \(K_{\varphi,p}\) on the group \(G\). Then he proceeds to a detailed study of the convolution operators on \(X\) defined by the kernels \(K_{\varphi,p}\). One could view these operators as an analogue, for Riemannian symmetric spaces (of rank one), of singular integral operators on Euclidean spaces. The first main theorem is a transference theorem between the norm of the convolution operator defined by the kernel \(K_{\varphi,p}\) on \(L^{p}(X)\) and the norm of the convolution operator defined by the kernel \(\varphi\) on \(L^{p}(R)\). In particular this theorem proves that these two norms are essentially proportional and provides a sharper estimation on the transference factor than the one given by \textit{R. Coifman} and \textit{G. Weiss} [Transference methods in analysis. CBMS Regional Conference Series Math. No. 31 (Providence 1977; Zbl 0377.43001)]. Also, as an application of his first result, the author proves a new variant of the so-called Herz majorizing principle for such convolution operators. Moreover, using the Plancherel theorem for \(L^{2}(X)\), the author studies the Fourier multipliers associated to these convolution operators and proves their \(L^{p}\)-boundedness. He also obtains sharper estimates of the \(L^{p}\)-norm of some imaginary powers of the critical \(L^{p}\)-Laplacian. The reader may find useful Section 2 of the paper, where some essential and standard facts of harmonic analysis on Lie groups are recalled, like the Cartan and the Iwasawa decompositions, and the corresponding integration formulas.
