A bounded domain \(\Omega \subset\mathbb{R}^n\) is partially filled with an ideal incompressible fluid. The rest of \(\Omega\) contains a gas. The author studies the evolution of this system starting from some given initial conditions under the following assumptions: \(\Omega\) is an \(n\)-dimensional torus, the motion is irrotational, surface tension is neglected. If \(u\) is the velocity potential, \(p\) the pressure and the interface is the zero level set of a function \(\Psi (x,t)\), then the problem is formulated as \[ \Delta u=0\quad \text{in }B_t \times \{t\} 0<t<T, \] \[ \partial_t u+\tfrac{1}{2}|\nabla u|^2+p_0=b(t)\quad \text{on } \Gamma_t \times \{t\},\;0<t<T, \] \[ \partial_t \Psi+\nabla u\cdot \nabla\Psi=0 \quad \text{on }\Gamma_t \times \{t\},\;0<t<T, \] with \(B_t\) denoting the subset of \(\Omega\) occupied by the liquid and \(\Gamma_t\) denoting the liquid/gas interface. The problem is stated in a generalized sense, which is too technical to be summarized here. The important thing is to remark that the generalized solution allows \(\Gamma_t\) to have positive two-dimensional measure. Existence is shown by means of a fixed point technique of nonstandard type.
