The rescaling \(M_t\) of a \(\text{II}_1\)-factor \(M\) by a positive number \(t\) was introduced by \textit{F. J. Murray} and \textit{J. von Neumann} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 44, 716-808 (1943; Zbl 0060.26903)]. In the recent paper of \textit{F. Radulescu} and the author [Math. Ann. 316, 61-82 (2000; Zbl 0970.46004)] it was proved that if \(Q(1),\ldots, Q(n)\) are \(\text{II}_1\)-factors \((n=2,3,\dots)\) and if \(0< t < \sqrt{1-\frac 1n}\), then \[ (Q(1)*\ldots *Q(n))_t)\cong Q(1)_t*\ldots *Q(n)_t*L(\mathbb{F}_r), \] where \(r=(n-1)(t^{-2}-1)\), * denotes the free product, \(L(\mathbb{F}_r)\), \(r>1\), is an interpolated free group factor. In the paper under review, the author studies so called free subproducts of von Neumann algebras \[ M=N\mathop{*}_{l \in I}[t_l,Q(l)], \] where \(N\) is a coefficient algebra which must be a \(\text{II}_1\)-factor, \(Q(l)\) are additional von Neumann algebras with specified normal faithful tracial states, \(0<t_l\leq 1\). There is also a generalization of free subproduct, which is called free scaled product. The author proves several results concerning these constructions, including rescaling results and results about free trade in free scaled products.
