A ring \(R\) is right semi-Artinian if it possesses a suitable transcendental analog of Loewy length. The author shows that such rings have the exchange property for direct sums of modules. Also, any irredundant full set of simple right modules has a canonical and Morita-invariant structure as an Artinian poset. For a large special class of semi-Artinian rings, parts of this poset correspond to certain two-sided ideals that are pure as left submodules of \(R\). Every Artinian poset arises from some semi-Artinian ring, possibly after adjunction of a maximal element.
