The author shows that two- and three-term transformations of the basic hypergeometric function \(_3\varphi_2\) may be unified by a procedure which is the analogue of Whipple's treatment of similar transformations of \(_3F_2[1]\). From some of these transformations, twenty relations that are analogues of Kummer's linear relations connecting three solutions of the ODE for \(_2F_1\) are obtained as limiting cases where a suitable parameter tends to zero. Out of the twenty \(q\)-relations, a few do connect three \(_2\varphi_1\)'s In most cases, however, other functions are involved. Equation (35) is given as an example: \[ _3\varphi_1\left[\begin{matrix} a,b,q/x\\ qab/c\end{matrix}; q;{x\over c}\right]= A{_2\varphi_1} \left[\begin{matrix} a,b\\ c\end{matrix}; q,x\right]+ B{_2\varphi_0} \left[ \begin{matrix} c/q,q/x\\ -\end{matrix}; q,{x\over c}\right] {_2\varphi_1}\left[\begin{matrix} qa/c,qb/c\\ q^2/c\end{matrix};q,x\right], \] \[ A={(qa/c,qb/c;q)_\infty \over(q/c, qab/c;q)_\infty}, \quad B={(a,b;q)_\infty \over(qab/c,c/q; q)_\infty}. \]
