Let \(K\) be a number field and let \(M\) be a motive over \(K\) in the sense of \textit{P. Deligne} and \textit{J. Milne} [Tannakian categories. Lect. Notes Math. 900, 101-228 (1982; Zbl 0477.14004)], i.e. determined by an absolute Hodge cycle over \(K\). The paper deals with the system of \(l\)-adic representations of the absolute Galois group \(G_K\) on \(M\), when \(M\) is three dimensional and equipped with a symmetric bilinear form. Assuming some mild additional conditions on \(M\) the author has obtained several explicit results about the images of such representations. In particular, the Grothendieck-Serre conjecture holds under the above conditions on \(M\): the \(G_K\)-module \(H_l(M)\) is semisimple. The author also provides geometrical examples of motives of the above type considering the symmetric square of an elliptic curve and \(K3\)-surfaces.
