The paper is devoted to the Cauchy problem for the modified Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation \[ h_t=-h_{xxxx} - h_{xx} +(1-\lambda)h_x^2 +\lambda h^2_{xx},\quad h(\cdot,0)=h_0, \] where \(\lambda\in[0,1]\). It is shown that if \(h_0\) is smooth, \(T\)-periodic with \({T\over 2\pi}>1\) and the norm \(\|h_{0xxx}\|_{L^2}\) is sufficiently small, then the above problem possesses a unique global solution. Also, if \(h\) is a maximal solution in \([0,\omega)\) and \(\omega<\infty\), then \(\|h_x(\cdot, t)\|_{L^p}\to \infty\) as \(t\uparrow \omega\) for any \(p>1\).
