Evolution strategies are iterative methods for obtaining optimal design using small stochastic/variations in design parameters. Although these strategies are slower than classical deterministic, gradient-based methods, they are here claimed to be more robust as they do not rely on continuity conditions and they are readily adaptable for use with simulation software. The paper presents a methodology for using evolutionary strategies together with multibody system dynamics to obtain optimal design of mechanical systems. Two example applications are provided. The paper presents an interesting new concept in multibody dynamics application. The paper should be of interest and use to both theoreticians and design engineers.
