Given a topological space \(X\), let \(\mathcal F (X)\) denote the space of all nonempty closed subsets of \(X\) equipped with the Vietoris topology, and \(\mathcal F_2 (X)\) be the subspace of \(\mathcal F (X)\) consisting of all subsets of \(X\) having at most two elements. A selection on \(\mathcal F (X) \) is a mapping \(f: \mathcal F (X) \to X\) with \(f(A) \in A\) for each \(A \in \mathcal F (X)\). A space \(X\) is orderable (or linearly ordered) if there exists a linear order on \(X\) such that the open interval topology coincides with the original one. It is shown in [\textit{T. Nogura} and \textit{D. Shakhmatov}, Rend. Circ. Mat. Palermo, II. Ser. 46, No. 2, 317-328 (1997; Zbl 0874.54018)] that a locally connected space \(X\) admitting a selection is orderable. The author asserts that the proof of this result given in the above quoted paper contains some inaccuracies, and gives his own proof of the result. Further, he also indicates that the statement made in Remark 16 of that paper, saying that to get the conclusion it suffices to assume the existence of a selection on \(\mathcal F_2 (X)\) only, requires some improvements. Finally, a characterization of connected spaces with a selection is presented.
