The authors describe a Lagrangian algorithm for computing barotropic free-surface flows involving shock waves. The algorithm is based on the finite element method, a total variation diminishing scheme, and an unstructured adaptive grid. Processes associated with a high-speed impact of a liquid drop on an obstacle and propagation of compression and rarefaction shocks in a metal subjected to an explosion or impact are analyzed.
