The author considers the abstract evolution equation \[ y'(t)= Ay(t)\quad\text{for }t\in [0,T),\tag{E} \] in a complex Banach space \(X\), where \(A\) is a spectral operator of scalar type and \(T\in (0,\infty]\). It is shown that \(y: [0,T)\to X\) is a weak solution to (E) if and only if there is an \(f\in \bigcap_{0\leq t< T} D(e^{tA})\) such that \(y(t)= e^{tA}f\) for \(t\in [0,T)\). The concept of weak solution used here is that of \textit{J. M. Ball} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 63, 370-373 (1977; Zbl 0353.47017)]. This result extends Theorem 3.1 of \textit{M. V. Markin} [Appl. Anal. 73, No. 3-4, 573-606 (1999; Zbl 1031.34056)], in which the problem was studied in a complex Hilbert space.
