    This paper is concerned with the existence of maximal and minimal solutions for the following initial value problem for the second order impulsive integro-differential equation of mixed type in a Banach space \(E\) \[ x''(t)=f(t,x(t),x'(t),(Tx)(t)), \quad t\in J:=[0,\infty), \;t\not=t_{k}, \] \[ \Delta x|_{t=t_{k}}=\beta_{k}x'(t_{k}), \] \[ \Delta x'|_{t=t_{k}}=-\gamma_{k}x'(t_{k}) \quad (k=1,2,3,\ldots), \] \[ x(0)=x_{0}, \qquad x'(0)=x_{0}^{*}, \] where \(f\in C(J\times E\times E\times E,E)\), \(0<t_{1}<t_{2}<\ldots,t_{k}<\ldots\), \(t_{k}\to\infty\), \(\beta_{k}\geq 0\), \(\gamma_{k}\geq 0\) \((k=1,2,3,\ldots)\), \(x_{0}, x_{0}^{*}\in E\), \((Tx)(t)=\int_{0}^{t}K(t,s)x(s) ds\), \(t\in J.\) The proof is based on a comparison result and the concept of upper and lower solutions. An example is presented illustrating the abstract theory.
