The author is inspired by a paper of \textit{N. V. Ilyushechkin} [Mat. Zametki 51, No. 3, 16-23 (1992; Zbl 0796.15009)] on the problem matrix discriminant/determinant. He constructs a matrix \(B\) whose determinant equals the discriminant. The determinant is expressed as a sum of square. The matrix \(B\) is invariant under similarity transformations. The inner product space aspects of the problem are studied. The number of nonzero terms in the expansions is determined.
