Let the difference equation \(x_{n+1}= F(x_n,\dots, x_{n-k})\), where \(k\) is a positive integer, have all solutions \(p\)-periodic. Then and only then the system of equations \[ F(s_{p-i},\dots, s_{p-i+k})= s_{p-i-1},\quad i= 1,2,\dots, p\geq k+2, \] has \(k+1\) independent variables. Here \(s_m= x_{n-m+1}\), \(m= 1,\dots, n\). All indices shall be taken modulo \(p\). Editorial remark: This article is a duplication of an article that has been published in [Appl. Math.
