The author considers the solution of the Helmholtz equation in a bounded domain with Lipschitz boundary and connected complement. If the solution and its normal derivative are constants at the boundary (so that the boundary value problem is overdetermined), then one conjectures that the domain is a ball. This conjecture is not proved. The Pompeiu conjecture is a particular case of this conjecture. Under some assumptions the author proves that the boundary of the domain has to be real-analytic, if the above overdetermined boundary value problem is solvable. The main technical tool in the proof is the result of \textit{D. Kinderlehrer} and \textit{L. Nirenberg} [Ann. Sc. Norm. Super. Pisa, Cl. Sci., IV. Ser. 4, 373--391 (1977; Zbl 0352.35023)]. A necessary and sufficient condition for a domain which fails to have Pompeiu property to be a ball is given in [\textit{A. G. Ramm}, J. Inverse Ill-Posed Probl. 6, 515--520 (1998; Zbl 0919.44001)].
