The authors derive a uniformly convergent mesh difference scheme using cubic spline in compression for the solution of a second-order singularly perturbed boundary value problem. The method is shown to have second- and fourth-order convergence depending on the choice of the parameters involved in the method. The last section of the paper contains numerical illustrations and, in order to demonstrate the efficiency of the method, the results are compared with the method developed by \textit{M. K. Kadalbajoo} and \textit{R. K. Bawa} [J. Optimization Theory Appl. 90, 405--416 (1996; Zbl 0951.65070)].
