The paper is concerned with the analysis of chatter (a violent vibratory motion) often found in machinery. The mathematical model uses a delay differential equation and the focus of the paper is to analyze stability and Hopf bifurcations in the model equations as a means to investigate chatter in the underlying physical system. In the later sections of the paper, detailed attention is given to the analysis of (first) single Hopf bifurcations and (later) double Hopf bifurcations. The conclusions are that this paper provides a first step in understanding global dynamics of machine chatter.
